About

The Elm Shades is a friendly community pub in the heart of the picturesque St John’s conservation area, 10 minutes’ walk from Redhill town centre. With our cheerful welcome, hearty pub food served daily and range of real ales, served in pleasant, recently-refurbished decor, we appeal to a whole variety of customers.

Situated on the edge of both Earlswood Common and Redhill Common, the pub is ideally placed for walkers; and well-behaved dogs are welcome. Bowls of water are provided on hot days for canine visitors, and the landlord has been known to offer the occasional doggy treat!

The pub’s location just a short drive (or 10 minutes’ walk) from the town centre also makes it a relaxing place for office workers to go for a spot of lunch to escape from the bustle and pressure of the daily grind. We have wi-fi and plenty of tables inside and out, so why not bear us in mind if you need a place to meet business contacts for a coffee and a chat?

Being open all day every day (from 11am till 11pm), the Elm Shades also appeals to staff at the East Surrey Hospital (just a mile down the road), and to local mums, who can call in for a relaxing cup of tea with friends, with or without their children.

The pub is also popular among local tradesmen, who enjoy popping in for a quick pint and to catch up with the sporting news on TV, after a day’s work.

The managers, Jason and Vicky Stoneman, have three young children so fully understand how difficult it can be to find somewhere to take the kids for an evening out. We are a child-friendly pub and welcome all well-behaved youngsters, until 9pm. We have a selection of toys and games indoors and a large play area in the garden.

Last but certainly not least, we are the favourite venue of many “locals”, some of whom have been coming here for decades for their tipple. There are a host of interesting characters who help to add charm to this lovely historic pub.
